A lot ofthe girls I taught had major behavior problems, but I also had the privilege ofteaching a very special young girl, Gisele, who is autistic. I learned thateven though you may have something planned, you may have to be spontaneous andchange things up to adapt to your environment. I hope to see these girls againeither during the school year or next summer!
Family Literacy Connection is a program in the Dougherty County area to bringfamilies together. One of the things they do is provide GED courses. The children learn how to improve their reading and math skills, andthey even learn how to play tennis! I believe it made them look upto me even more. I could not do all five sessions in five weeks, however.
I hadto change my plans and just teach the program in four weeks because ofconflicted schedules. This is yet another example of how sometimes thingschange and so your plans must change. These kids were demographically and socio-economicallyvery different from the other groups I worked with. Most of the kids were veryyoung—going into kindergarten—but there were a few older ones in the group whowere elementary school aged.
These kids were very cute, and they loved to talk! They were very good listeners and were eager to participate in the activities. Like FLC, I had to teach all five subjects in four weeks. Most of these kidswere very well behaved and lots of fun to be around! All in all, having theopportunity to teach these kids and inspire them to be their best has alteredmy life for the good! It has been one of the best summers ever being able to bewith children almost every day. Staying in school and working diligently is key to being successful in the classroom.
Doing well in school requires paying attention in class and not being afraid to ask questions. Many people take the education offered to them for granted. This attitude towards school will result in poor grades. Paying attention in class will prepare you for the next step in furthering your education, which is college. Yes, school can be tough sometimes but we must be thankful that we have schools to attend and teachers to instruct us.
