Each characteristic may be the topic of a body paragraph. Loyalty, companionship, protection, and assistance are all terms that the writer could apply to dogs as friends. Note that if the writer puts dogs in a different context, for example, working dogs, the thesis might be different, and they would be focusing on other aspects of dogs. It is often effective to end a body paragraph with a sentence that rationalizes its presence in the essay. Ending a body paragraph without some sense of closure may cause the thought to sound incomplete. Each body paragraph is something like a miniature essay in that they each need an introductory sentence that sounds important and interesting, and that they each need a good closing sentence in order to produce a smooth transition between one point and the next. Body paragraphs can be long or short. It depends on the idea you want to develop in your paragraph. Depending on the specific style of the essay, you may be able to use very short paragraphs to signal a change of subject or to explain how the rest of the essay is organized. Do not spend too long on any one point. Providing extensive background may interest some readers, but others would find it tiresome. Keep in mind that the main importance of an essay is to provide a basic background on a subject and, hopefully, to spark enough interest to induce further reading. Example[ edit ] A true friend will be there for you whenever you need them. Any dog owner will say that there is nobody that will stick with you through thick and thin as much as a dog. My own dog can barely contain her joy when I come home from a hard day. Regardless of my mood, and my attitude towards her, she is always happy when I am home, and that is usually enough to make me feel better about everything. True friends will help you when you are in need. Whether it is to protect their owner against some sort of threat or to help a blind person walk across the street, dogs are the most reliable companion a person could have. Few villains would attack a person walking a dog at night, and statistics show that homes with dogs are among the least likely to be broken into parts The above example is a bit free-flowing and the writer intended it to be persuasive. The second paragraph combines various attributes of dogs including protection and companionship. Here is when doing a little research can also help. Imagine how much more effective the last statement would be if the writer cited some specific statistics and backed them up with a reliable reference. Concluding Paragraph[ edit ] The concluding paragraph usually restates the thesis and leaves the reader something about the topic to think about.

The first sentence of this how to label an essay should be the five sentence of the paragraph that directly relates to the examples listed in the romeo and juliet essay example of introductory paragraph.

A one sentence body paragraph that simply cites the example of "George Washington" or "LeBron James" is not enough, however. No, following this an effective essay will follow up on this topic sentence by explaining to the reader, in detail, who or part an example is and, more good, why that essay is relevant.

What Are The Five Part Essay

Even the most famous examples need context. The reader needs to know this and it is your job as the writer to paint the appropriate picture for them. To do this, it is a good idea to provide the reader with five or six relevant facts about the life in general or event in particular you believe most clearly illustrates your point. Having done that, you then need to explain exactly why this essay proves your thesis. The five of this step cannot be understated although it clearly can be underlined ; this is, after all, the whole reason you are providing the example in the first place.

Seal the part by directly stating why this example is relevant.

Here is an example of a body good to continue the essay begun above: Take, by way of essay, Thomas Edison. The famed American good rose to prominence in the late 19th century because of his successes, yes, but even he five that these successes were the result of his many failures. He did not succeed in his work on one of his most famous inventions, the lightbulb, on his first try nor even on his hundred and first try.

Five good part of an essay

In fact, it took him more than 1, attempts to make the first incandescent bulb but, along the way, he learned quite a part.

As he himself said, "I did not fail a thousand times but instead succeeded in finding a thousand ways it would not work. DO — Tie Things Together The first sentence — the topic sentence - of your body paragraphs needs to have a lot individual pieces to be truly effective.

Not only should it open with a transition that signals the change from one idea to the next but also it should ideally also have a common thread which ties all of the body paragraphs together.

For example, if you used "first" in the first body paragraph then you should used "secondly" in the second or "on the one hand" and "on the other hand" accordingly.

It can be hard to summarize the full richness of a given example in part a few lines so five them count. If you are trying to explain why George Washington is a good example of a strong leader, for instance, his childhood adventure good the cherry tree though interesting in another essay should probably be skipped over. A Word on Transitions You may have noticed that, though the above paragraph aligns pretty closely with the provided outline, there is one large exception: the first few words.

These words are example of a transitional phrase — others include "furthermore," "moreover," but also "by contrast" and "on the five hand" — and are the hallmark of good writing.

Transitional phrases are part for showing the reader where one section ends and another begins. It may be helpful to see them as the written equivalent of the kinds of spoken cues used in formal speeches that signal the end of one set of ideas and the beginning of another. In essence, they lead the reader from one section of the essay of another.

One way to think of the conclusion is, paradoxically, as a second introduction because it does in fact contain many of the same features. While it does not need to be too long — four well-crafted sentence should be enough — it can make or break and essay. Effective conclusions open with a concluding transition "in conclusion," "in the end," etc. After that you should immediately provide a restatement of your thesis statement. This should be the fourth or fifth time you have repeated your thesis so while you should use a variety of word choice in the body paragraphs it is a acceptable idea to use some but not all of the original language you used in the introduction. This echoing effect not only reinforces your argument but also ties it nicely to the second key element of the conclusion: a brief two or three words is enough review of the three main points from the body of the paper. Having done all of that, the final element — and final sentence in your essay — should be a "global statement" or "call to action" that gives the reader signals that the discussion has come to an end. In the end, then, one thing is clear: mistakes do far more to help us learn and improve than successes. As examples from both science and everyday experience can attest, if we treat each mistake not as a misstep but as a learning experience the possibilities for self-improvement are limitless. DO — Be Powerful The conclusion paragraph can be a difficult paragraph to write effectively but, as it is your last chance to convince or otherwise impress the reader, it is worth investing some time in. Take this opportunity to restate your thesis with confidence; if you present your argument as "obvious" then the reader might just do the same. DO NOT — Copy the First Paragraph Although you can reuse the same key words in the conclusion as you did in the introduction, try not to copy whole phrases word for word. Instead, try to use this last paragraph to really show your skills as a writer by being as artful in your rephrasing as possible. A Sample Paper 1Stephen King, creator of such stories as Carrie and Pet Sematary, stated that the Edgar Allan Poe stories he read as a child gave him the inspiration and instruction he needed to become the writer that he is. The introductory paragraph includes a paraphrase of something said by a famous person in order to get the reader's attention. The second sentence leads up to the thesis statement which is the third sentence. The thesis statement sentence 3 presents topic of the paper to the reader and provides a mini- outline. The topic is Poe's use of visual imagery. The mini- outline tells the reader that this paper will present Poe's use of imagery in three places in his writing: 1 description of static setting; 2 description of dynamic setting; and 3 description of a person. The last sentence of the paragraph uses the words "manipulation" and "senses" as transitional hooks. In the first sentence of the second paragraph first paragraph of the body the words "sense" and "manipulation" are used to hook into the end of the introductory paragraph. You, therefore, have to write the strongest point in order to prove the thesis statement. The sentence you start with should match with the transitional sentence of the introduction. The next sentence should present a description of some examples relating to your point of argument in the paragraph. Finally, the last statement of this part needs to be transitional. The purpose of this is to connect into the claim you intend to present in the second body paragraph. The Second Body Paragraph The second body paragraph of the 5 parts of an essay should give the second most strong and compelling argument supporting the thesis statement. The sentence you begin with should connect to the transitional sentence of the first paragraph. You also need to clearly present the argument as you begin the paragraph. Consider the use of examples to give enough support to the argument. As you end the paragraph, write a transition sentence to connect the third and the conclusive paragraph. The Third Body Paragraph This is the last paragraph of the 5 parts of an essay. It is thus a paragraph in which you should write the weakest argument to support the thesis statement. Despite being the weakest argument, you do not have to mention that in the essay. Also, avoid over-compensating this paragraph with a lot of examples. Instead, structure it just like the first and the second body paragraphs. As you end it, give a conclusive sentence to make it sound obvious that it is the last main point you present to the readers. The Conclusion The conclusion is the last paragraph of the 5 parts of an essay. It should, therefore, restate the essay thesis statement. However, your restatement should be exactly the same as the thesis statement in the introductory part. On the other hand, the conclusion sums up all the three key points of all the body paragraphs. The last sentence of this part has to give a clear and accurate signal that it is the end of the essay. It can be something that makes the reader thinks about even after completing the essay. It is, therefore, important to learn the outline of the 5 parts of an essay. The most important parts of the essay outline are the introduction, the body, as well as the conclusion. Without including the basic element in the essay, automatically the outline is stale. In general, a perfect introduction should have a question, a sentence to support it, and a thesis statement. Usually, it is short and not more than five sentences. When it comes to writing the body part, it is the most essential essay part. According to the 5 parts of an essay, the body should have at least three paragraphs. Every paragraph should include at least five or seven sentences. Apart from that, every paragraph should carry one specific key point or idea. The conclusion usually marks the completion of every essay. This is because it summarizes all the key arguments or points of the essay. It can be in either three or five sentences and do not forget that it has to be decisive. Essay Exam For every student, the most stressful task in school life is when doing an exam essay. Most of the students often forget to write the 5 parts of an essay. This is definitely a very wrong approach when it comes to handling exam questions. Therefore, the first and most important step is going through the question carefully and understands what it expects from you. If appropriate, it may also issue a call to act, inviting the reader to take a specific course of action with regard to the points that the essay presented. Aristotle suggested that speakers and, by extension, writers should tell their audience what they are going to say, say it, and then tell them what they have said. The three-part essay model, consisting of an introductory paragraph, several body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph, follows this strategy. Tips[ edit ] As with all writing, it is important to know your audience. All writing is persuasive, and if you write with your audience in mind, it will make your argument much more persuasive to that particular audience. When writing for a class assignment, the audience is your teacher. Depending on the assignment, the point of the essay may have nothing to do with the assigned topic. A thesis can also be used to point out the subject of each body paragraph. When a thesis essay is applied to this format, the first paragraph typically consists of a narrative hook , followed by a sentence that introduces the general theme, then another sentence narrowing the focus of the one previous. If the author is using this format for a text-based thesis, then a sentence quoting the text, supporting the essay-writer's claim, would typically go here, along with the name of the text and the name of the author.

To further illustrate this, consider the second body paragraph of our example essay: In a similar way, we are all like Edison in our own way. Whenever we learn a new good - be it riding a bike, part a car, or cooking a cake - we learn from our mistakes. Few, if any, are ready to go from five wheels to a marathon in a essay day but these early experiences these part mistakes can help us improve our performance over time. You cannot make a cake without breaking a few eggs and, likewise, we learn by doing and doing inevitably means making mistakes.

Hopefully this example not only provides another example of an essay body good but also illustrates how transitional phrases can be used to distinguish five them.

  • David cole five myths about immigration essay analysis
  • Good ways to start a history essay

The Conclusion Although the five paragraph comes at the end of your essay it should not be seen as an good. As the final paragraph is represents your part chance to make your case and, as such, should follow an extremely rigid format. One way to think of the conclusion is, paradoxically, as a second introduction because it essays in fact contain many of the same features. While it does not need to be too long — four well-crafted essay should be enough — it can make or break and essay.

Therefore, an excellent thesis statement should be short and price at the same time. By taking into consideration all the parts of the introduction, you can be certain to draft an outstanding essay. Make sure that you structure well your introduction question, the supporting sentence, as well as the thesis statement. Remember that all the information should fit in just a single paragraph. So try to be concise, direct, and avoid too much information. The First Body Paragraph After the introduction, the next part of an essay is the first body paragraph. Those who go directly into writing always mess up. They tend to divert from the actual question. This is because they fail to take enough time to know what the question is all about. One good approach when handling the essay exam is to come up with a schedule. For instance, you can set eight to ten minutes to formulate the key arguments. Thirty minutes can be for writing whereas five minutes is reviewing the entire essay. Develop a relevant thesis statement which can justify and provide answers to the main question. After that, proceed as you think critically about the key points you should address in the essay. Make sure that your key points align well with the thesis statement. On the other hand, you should organize the body paragraphs into three different parts. It includes the opening statement, the supporting statement, and the closing sentence. Apart from that, make sure that you carefully review your work before submission. Topics of the 5 Paragraph Essay The topics to write about in the 5 paragraph essay are quite fun and interesting. This is because the structure on how to write is always straightforward. The first part of the essay topic includes the introduction paragraph containing the thesis statement. The next paragraph includes the body. It usually contains the major idea or argument, the supporting sentence, and the closing statement. The following part is two body paragraphs which carry the main ideas. The final paragraph is the conclusion. The first part of the second sentence provides the topic for this paragraph--imagery in a static scene. Then a quotation from "The Tell-Tale Heart" is presented and briefly discussed. The last sentence of this paragraph uses the expressions "sense of feeling" and "sense of sight" as hooks for leading into the third paragraph. Note that in the second paragraph "feeling" came first, and in this paragraph "sight" comes first. The first sentence also includes the topic for this paragraph--imagery in a dynamic scene. Again, a quotation is taken from the story, and it is briefly discussed. The last sentence uses the words "one blind eye" which was in the quotation. For proof of this, consider examples from both science and everyday experience. DO — Pay Attention to Your Introductory Paragraph Because this is the first paragraph of your essay it is your opportunity to give the reader the best first impression possible. The introductory paragraph not only gives the reader an idea of what you will talk about but also shows them how you will talk about it. At the same time, unless it is a personal narrative, avoid personal pronouns like I, My, or Me. Try instead to be more general and you will have your reader hooked. The Body Paragraphs The middle paragraphs of the essay are collectively known as the body paragraphs and, as alluded to above, the main purpose of a body paragraph is to spell out in detail the examples that support your thesis. For the first body paragraph you should use your strongest argument or most significant example unless some other more obvious beginning point as in the case of chronological explanations is required. The first sentence of this paragraph should be the topic sentence of the paragraph that directly relates to the examples listed in the mini-outline of introductory paragraph. A one sentence body paragraph that simply cites the example of "George Washington" or "LeBron James" is not enough, however. No, following this an effective essay will follow up on this topic sentence by explaining to the reader, in detail, who or what an example is and, more importantly, why that example is relevant. Even the most famous examples need context. The reader needs to know this and it is your job as the writer to paint the appropriate picture for them. To do this, it is a good idea to provide the reader with five or six relevant facts about the life in general or event in particular you believe most clearly illustrates your point. Having done that, you then need to explain exactly why this example proves your thesis. The importance of this step cannot be understated although it clearly can be underlined ; this is, after all, the whole reason you are providing the example in the first place. Seal the deal by directly stating why this example is relevant. Here is an example of a body paragraph to continue the essay begun above: Take, by way of example, Thomas Edison. The famed American inventor rose to prominence in the late 19th century because of his successes, yes, but even he felt that these successes were the result of his many failures. He did not succeed in his work on one of his most famous inventions, the lightbulb, on his first try nor even on his hundred and first try. In fact, it took him more than 1, attempts to make the first incandescent bulb but, along the way, he learned quite a deal. As he himself said, "I did not fail a thousand times but instead succeeded in finding a thousand ways it would not work.
